An Egyptian girl films with her mobile phone during a pro-democracy rally at Tahrir Square, in Cairo

June 16 and 17, 2012, mark two of the most important days in modern Egyptian history. They represent the final phase of the election cycle – the face off between Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi and ex-Mubarak prime minister Ahmed Shafiq for President.

Voice of America is putting the call out to university students, freelance journalists and youth of all political points of view to engage with our reporters to tell the story of Egypt on Election Day. If events warrant we will continue the campaign.

From June 16 to June 17, grab your mobile phone and hit the streets to tell the story of Egypt’s hopes and concerns through friendsfamily and average Egyptians.

Here’s how:

  • Using tweets, photos and YouTube videos on your mobile phone, tablet or PC,  tell the story of Egypt’s hopes and dreams from your perspective in 48 hours.
  • Hashtag everything you record with the #EgyptDecides hashtag.
  • VOA curation teams will go through all of your content and publish “social streams” on MiddleEastVoices.com.
  • The best social stories will be featured on MiddleEastVoices.com and VOANews.com – two news site that reaches millions worldwide.

What to ask people:

Do you think your vote matters? Who will ultimately decide the presidential election result? SCAF? The Supreme Court? The Egyptian people? Other forces? What does Egypt need NOW? What do you need?

We will be having a planning meeting at Cafe Riche on Sharia Talaat Harb on Thursday, June 14 at 4 p.m. Cairo Time. RSVP on Facebook here.

Tell your friends to use #EgyptDecides to flag video, Instagram, tweets and Facebook comments. Then visit MiddleEastVoices.com and VOANews.com to see your contribution!
